George Orwell lived in Canonbury Square in Islington, an area in North London. He had a vision of a totally authoritarian world where every one is continuously watched and monitored. In 1949 he described his vision in his now famous book ‘1984’. A poster to mark the launch of Orwell's book, carried the words: 'Big Brother is Watching You'.
Today, within a 200 metre radius of his flat there are no less than 32 CCTV cameras watching the people on the street!
There are a staggering 4.2 million CCTV cameras in the UK and each person is recorded by a CCTV camera an average of 300 times every day. The police have now introduced a CCTV camera system to read and process vehicle registration plates, so not only are people being monitored but also the vehicles. It is clear that we all have a great deal of exposure to CCTV cameras that are monitored by the authorities.
